 United Nations Secretary-General's Campaign
to End Violence Against Women

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures and communities: violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable.

South Africa commemorates International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Globally, up to six out of every ten women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In light of South Africa's high rate of domestic violence, and its strong government and civil society engagement on the issue, the UN Information Centre in South Africa marked the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women by installing a banner across the front of the UN building in central Pretoria.

The building is located on a busy city intersection and has been viewed by thousands of motorists and pedestrians. It was mounted at the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, and continues to act as a constant reminder that violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights, and that global efforts must be made to end it.
